The EPREL registration number identifies a model in EPREL, the European Commission’s product database for the energy label. For smartphones and tablets, the user manual or other product documents must refer to the entry by number, link or QR code; in practice the QR code on the label also leads there.
The supplier must register each new model before placing it on the market (Regulation (EU) 2017/1369). For smartphones and tablets, EPREL holds the repairability class, the index, the minimum years of software updates and links to repair instructions, spare parts and prices.
What is the EPREL database?
EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) is the European Commission’s product database for the energy label, run by the Directorate-General for Energy. Each model with an energy label has an entry with a registration number, the label and the product information sheet. The number is a plain figure such as 2402623.
The supplier enters the values of the product information sheet and the technical documentation before placing the first unit of a new model on the market. Suppliers must give dealers the label and the sheet in electronic form. Information in the public part is not deleted. As a seller you register nothing, unless you are the supplier yourself, for example because you sell goods under your own brand or import them into the EU. Sellers outside the EU will find more in Selling into the EU from outside.
Where the registration number is printed
| Where | What you find there |
|---|---|
| User manual or other product documents | a link or QR code to the EPREL entry, or the registration number itself; for smartphones and tablets the supplier must provide this |
| Printed energy label | a QR code; in practice it opens the EPREL entry, and the figure at the end of the address is the registration number |
| “Product information sheet” link in stores and on manufacturer sites | often leads straight into EPREL; the number is shown in the entry |
| Your supplier | must give you the label and the sheet electronically; ask there if you have nothing |
How to search the EPREL database
- With a number. Enter it in the free EPREL lookup to see class, index, sub-scores and manufacturer links together. In EPREL itself, eprel.ec.europa.eu/qr/ followed by the number opens the entry.
- Without a number. On eprel.ec.europa.eu, choose the product group (for phones: smartphones and slate tablets) and search by brand and model identifier, in our example APPLE and A3520.
- In the entry. You find the label, the product information sheet and the individual values. Note the registration number against the product in your store.
What EPREL holds for smartphones and tablets
Entry 2402623 has 81 fields. These are the ones that matter for your product page:

|---|---|---|
| Repairability class | repairabilityClass | A to E (2402623: C) |
| Repairability index | repairabilityIndex | 1.00 to 5.00 (2402623: 2.82) |

Other product groups with an energy label, such as washing machines or fridges, are in EPREL too, but without a repairability class. Tumble dryers get one for units placed on the market from 1 January 2027. For all other goods, sellers give spare parts and manual information. What the class means is explained in Repairability class A to E.
Who is responsible for the data
According to the EPREL disclaimer, the data for each model come directly from the supplier, who alone is responsible for their accuracy. The Commission gives no warranty that the data are accurate, complete or up to date. National market surveillance authorities handle enforcement. If a value looks wrong, contact the supplier.
EPREL API and terms of use
EPREL offers a public API. According to EPREL, searching and retrieving models requires an API key, requested through a form signed with an electronic seal or digital signature. On 13 October 2026, a single lookup by registration number also worked without a key; EPREL does not promise that this will continue.
The terms of use have applied since 3 June 2024. They allow commercial use of the data in apps and comparison tools, but not selling the data as such. Anyone who stores the data must keep them up to date and apply corrections. The source must be named, and nothing may suggest that EPREL or the Commission endorses or sponsors the use. repairinfo.app and RepairInfoEU are not offered by the Commission.
Using EPREL numbers in your store
For a single device, the free EPREL lookup is enough. For a whole store, enter the EPREL number for each product in the Shopify app RepairInfoEU. The app puts class, index and manufacturer links into the block below the buy button, reloads the data from EPREL every week and shows a source line with registration number and date. This is included in every plan, from $6.99 a month, with a 14-day trial.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register a model in EPREL as a seller?
Registration is the supplier’s job. If you manufacture goods, sell them under your own brand or import them into the EU, you may be the supplier yourself, with obligations of your own; that depends on the case.
Is the EPREL number the same as the EAN?
No. The registration number belongs to a model’s entry in EPREL; the EAN (GTIN) is the item’s barcode. With an EAN, the barcode check searches the French repairability index data.
Do I need the EPREL entry for the energy label in my store?
You may show the product information sheet through a link to the product database, labelled as the product information sheet. For that you need the entry, so in practice the number.
