The EPREL lookup shows, for a registration number, the repairability class A to E and the index from 1 to 5 that the manufacturer or importer has entered for a smartphone or tablet in the EU database EPREL. Since 27 September 2026, online stores in the EU must state the repairability score before purchase where one exists (Directive (EU) 2024/825). Whether this means the class or the index is not settled; showing both covers both readings.
What the lookup shows
All values come from the public part of EPREL, the European Commission’s product database for the energy label. The supplier, meaning the manufacturer or importer, entered them and is responsible for their accuracy. The result is part of the address (#nr=), so you can share it as a link.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Repairability class | A (most repairable) to E. It appears on the energy label. |
| Index | Repairability index from 1 to 5 with two decimals, such as 2.82; the class follows from it. The product information sheet states it. |
| Sub-scores | Six ratings of 1 to 5 points each: disassembly depth (weighted 25 per cent), fasteners, tools, spare parts, software updates and repair information (15 per cent each). |
| Software updates | Minimum number of years of operating system updates, as stated in the entry. |
| Battery | Whether users can replace the battery themselves. |
| Links | The manufacturer’s repair instructions and spare parts page, product information sheet and label as PDF, the EPREL entry. |
Where to find the registration number
The user manual or other documents supplied with the device must refer to the EPREL entry by registration number, link or QR code. The label also carries a QR code. In practice it opens the EPREL entry, and the figure at the end of the address is the registration number. Type the number, paste the link or scan the QR code with your camera if your browser supports it. The registration number is not the EAN on the packaging; for barcodes, use the barcode check. How to search EPREL by brand and model is explained in Finding the EPREL number.
From the result to your store
Below the result you see how class and index look on a product page. For single products in any store system, the free HTML snippet puts them into a block you can paste. An EPREL entry can change, and each version carries a version number. The Shopify app RepairInfoEU stores class and index for each product, shows them below the buy button and checks them against EPREL every week.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the lookup not find my number?
It only searches smartphones and slate tablets. Numbers from other product groups, such as washing machines, carry no repairability class; for those devices, information on spare parts and manuals is what counts. The obligation check shows which.
Is the energy label behind the arrow enough?
The arrow next to the price shows the energy efficiency class; the repairability class appears only on the label behind it. Whether that meets the requirement is an open question. Showing the class in a separate block as well avoids it.
Which index gives which class?
A from 4.00, B from 3.35, C from 2.55, D from 1.75 and E from 1.00 (Regulation (EU) 2023/1669, Annex II). An index of 2.82 therefore means class C.
