Since 20 June 2025, the EU energy label of smartphones and slate tablets has shown a repairability class from A to E (Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/1669). The class follows from a repairability index on a scale of 1 to 5: class C means an index from 2.55 to below 3.35, class A an index of 4.00 or more.
Since 27 September 2026, sellers must give the repairability score to EU consumers before purchase (Article 6(1)(u) of Directive 2011/83/EU as amended by Directive (EU) 2024/825). The supplier registers the class in the EU database EPREL.
Which devices have a repairability class
The class is part of the energy label under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/1669. It covers two device types, defined by the diagonal of the touchscreen. Tumble dryers follow in 2027.
| Device | Scope | Class since |
|---|---|---|
| Smartphone | Mobile phone with a touchscreen from 10.16 cm (4 inches) to below 17.78 cm (7 inches) | 20 Jun 2025 |
| Slate tablet | Touchscreen from 17.78 cm (7 inches) to below 44.20 cm (17.4 inches), no permanently attached keyboard, operating system for mobile devices | 20 Jun 2025 |
| Household tumble dryer | Units placed on the market from 1 January 2027, on a scale of their own (see below) | 1 Jan 2027 |
| Excluded | Devices with a rollable flexible main display, smartphones for high-security communication | no class |
As of October 2026 we have found no other EU repairability score. Laptops, washing machines and TVs therefore have no class. For them, sellers give information on spare parts and manuals instead.
What classes A to E mean
A is the most repairable class, E the least. Only the repairability index counts, a value from 1.00 to 5.00.
| Class | Repairability index |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 or more |
| B | 3.35 to below 4.00 |
| C | 2.55 to below 3.35 |
| D | 1.75 to below 2.55 |
| E | 1.00 to below 1.75 |
Class C is the middle of the five. An index of 3.34 is still class C; 3.35 is class B.
How the index is calculated
The supplier scores six parameters from 1 to 5 points, using the method set out in the regulation. The index is the weighted sum.
| Parameter | Weight |
|---|---|
| Disassembly depth | 0.25 |
| Fasteners | 0.15 |
| Tools | 0.15 |
| Spare parts | 0.15 |
| Software updates | 0.15 |
| Repair information | 0.15 |
The product information sheet states the class, the index as “x.xx/5” and the six sub-scores. The index therefore runs to 5, not to 10 like the French repairability index.
Example: class C with an index of 2.82
The model APPLE A3520 is registered in EPREL under number 2402623.
EPREL 2402623, APPLE A3520
Repairability class C · index 2.82 out of 5
Software updates for at least 5 years · Source: EPREL, retrieved 13 Oct 2026
2.82 lies between 2.55 and 3.35, which gives class C.
What your product page must show
For smartphones and tablets, two sets of rules apply side by side.
| Requirement | Legal basis | What the customer must see |
|---|---|---|
| Repairability score | Article 6(1)(u) of Directive 2011/83/EU as amended by Directive (EU) 2024/825, since 27 Sep 2026; in Germany Art. 246a § 1(1) No. 20 EGBGB | the score, before the order, in a clear and comprehensible way |
| Energy label and product information sheet | Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/1669, since 20 Jun 2025 | the label close to the price, which may be nested behind an arrow; the sheet, or a link to the database labelled as the product information sheet |
The arrow next to the price shows the energy efficiency class, not the repairability class. The repairability class appears only on the label, which opens on click. Whether the label behind the arrow meets the duty to give the repairability score is not settled. Nor is it settled whether “repairability score” means the class or the index.
The Shopify app RepairInfoEU therefore names the class explicitly in its own block below the buy button, with the index alongside if you choose. That is a decision of the app, not the legal position. The app loads class and index by EPREL number and checks them against EPREL every week.
Where the class comes from
Sellers do not calculate the class. Before placing a model on the market, the supplier enters class, index and the other values of the product information sheet in EPREL, the European Commission’s product database. The supplier must also give dealers the label and the sheet in electronic form. According to the EPREL disclaimer, the supplier alone is responsible for the accuracy of the data.
With the registration number, the free EPREL lookup shows class, index and manufacturer links. Where to find the EPREL registration number explains where the number is printed.
Tumble dryers from 2027: a different scale
Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/1353 adds a repairability class to the energy label of household tumble dryers. It is mandatory for units placed on the market from 1 January 2027; suppliers have been allowed to use the new label voluntarily since 24 November 2025. The index uses a different scale.
| Class | Index for tumble dryers |
|---|---|
| A | above 9.00 |
| B | 7.00 to 9.00 |
| C | 5.00 to below 7.00 |
| D | 3.00 to below 5.00 |
| E | below 3.00 |
Dryers placed on the market before 2027 may be sold without time limit with the old label, which has no class. Whether the repairability score duty then covers every dryer sold from 2027 or only those with the new label, and whether older units stay under the spare parts information rule, is an open question.
Frequently asked questions
Who sets the repairability class?
The supplier, usually the manufacturer or importer, using the method in Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/1669. Sellers take the class from the label, the product information sheet or EPREL.
Is the class the same as the French repairability index?
No. The French index is a score out of 10 under French law and is not an EU repairability score. It has no longer applied to smartphones since 7 July 2025.
Do smartphones also need spare parts information?
No. Where a repairability score exists, the law requires only the score; spare parts information is then voluntary. EPREL still holds manufacturer links to spare parts, prices and repair instructions.
