How the French repairability index is calculated

Five criteria worth 20 points each, a score out of 10 with one decimal, five colours. Plus the real averages per category from the data.gouv.fr dataset.

The French repairability index (indice de réparabilité) is a score out of 10 that manufacturers or importers determine for each model: five criteria worth 20 points each (documentation, ease of disassembly, availability and price of spare parts, one product-specific criterion) are added up and divided by ten (Articles R. 541-212 and R. 541-214 of the Code de l’environnement).

The score has at most one decimal; the logo shows it in one of five colours, from red (0 to 1.9) to dark green (8 to 10), under the arrêté of 29 December 2020.

The five criteria

CriterionWhat is assessedPoints
1. DocumentationHow long technical documentation and advice on use and maintenance stay available free of charge20
2. Ease of disassemblyHow the product can be taken apart: access, tools, fasteners20
3. Spare parts availabilityHow long spare parts stay on the market and how fast they are delivered20
4. Spare parts pricePrice of spare parts relative to the price of the product20
5. Product-specific criterionSet per category, where relevant including a usage counter visible to consumers20

Each sub-criterion is scored out of ten and weighted; the weights of one criterion add up to 2, giving at most 20 points. The total out of 100 becomes the score out of 10. The detailed grids with parts lists and sub-criteria are set by a separate arrêté for each product type.

Rounding

The score has at most one decimal. If the second decimal is below 5, it is rounded down, otherwise up: 8.64 becomes 8.6, 8.65 becomes 8.7.

The required signage is the words “indice de réparabilité” with a pictogram showing the score. Its colour depends on the score. The digits of the score must be at least as large as the digits of the price.

Screen colours approximated; the Pantone references in the arrêté are binding. The official pictogram is provided by the French ministry.

Who calculates the index and where to find it

Manufacturers or importers determine the index and its parameters and pass them to sellers free of charge in digital form. The seller shows the score next to the price and makes the parameters available. Anyone can request the index and parameters from the manufacturer or importer: they must reply within 15 days, for at least two years after the last unit of a model was placed on the market.

Many scores are published by data.gouv.fr as an open dataset. Look up a single model with the barcode check (including the five sub-scores), or whole categories in the rankings.

The French index is not an EU repairability score. Since June 2025, smartphones and tablets carry the EU repairability class A to E on the energy label.

Frequently asked questions

How is the French repairability index calculated?

Five criteria worth up to 20 points each (documentation, ease of disassembly, spare parts availability, spare parts price, one product-specific criterion) are added up and divided by ten. The result is a score out of 10 with one decimal.

Who calculates the index?

The manufacturer or importer, for each model it places on the French market (Article R. 541-212 of the Code de l’environnement). Sellers receive the score and parameters free of charge and show them at the point of sale.

What do the logo colours mean?

0 to 1.9 red, 2 to 3.9 orange, 4 to 5.9 yellow, 6 to 7.9 light green, 8 to 10 dark green (arrêté of 29 December 2020).
