For goods without an EU repairability score, sellers must tell consumers before purchase about spare parts (availability, estimated cost, ordering procedure), repair and maintenance instructions and repair restrictions (Article 6(1)(v) of Directive 2011/83/EU as amended by Directive (EU) 2024/825, applicable since 27 September 2026; in Germany Art. 246a § 1(1) No. 21 EGBGB).
The duty applies where the producer makes this information available to the seller. As of October 2026, it concerns all goods except smartphones and slate tablets.
The five points sellers must cover
The table shows what each point means, how it can look on the product page and where you find the information.
| Point | What it means | Example for the product page | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Availability of spare parts | whether and for how long the parts needed to keep the goods in conformity can be supplied | “Spare parts available for at least 10 years” | producer’s documents and spare parts list, French data |
| Estimated cost | roughly what the spare parts cost | “Door seal €39, spray arm €24” | producer’s price list |
| Ordering procedure | where and how customers order the parts | link “Order spare parts” | producer’s spare parts shop |
| Repair and maintenance instructions | whether instructions exist and where | links “Repair instructions” and “Maintenance instructions” | producer’s website, user manual |
| Repair restrictions | what limits repair, such as parts supplied only to professionals | “Pump and circuit board only via professional repairers” | producer |
For smartphones and tablets with a repairability class, the law requires only the repairability score; this information is voluntary there.
Only what the producer makes available
Under recital 36 of Directive (EU) 2024/825, this covers what the producer gives you and what it states on the product, the packaging, tags and labels. Sellers should not have to search product-specific websites for it.
Two questions are not settled. Does a publication that ecodesign law requires of the manufacturer count as “made available”? And what applies if you are the manufacturer, own brand or importer yourself? Both readings are set out in When the manufacturer provides nothing. If you have nothing, ask the producer; the free manufacturer request covers all five points.
Three prices that are often confused
The “estimated cost” sellers must show is not the same as the prices manufacturers must publish under other rules.
| Term | Legal basis | Who | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Estimated cost of spare parts | Article 6(1)(v) of Directive 2011/83/EU (as amended by Directive (EU) 2024/825) | seller, where the producer provides it | product page, before purchase |
| Indicative pre-tax prices of spare parts | ecodesign, e.g. Regulations (EU) 2023/1670 (smartphones, tablets), 2023/2533 (tumble dryers), 2024/1103 (local space heaters) | manufacturer, importer or authorised representative | freely accessible website |
| Indicative prices for typical repairs | Article 5(5) of Directive (EU) 2024/1799; in Germany Section 479d(2) BGB | manufacturer of goods listed in Annex II of that directive | freely accessible website |
The manufacturer’s indicative prices are an obvious source for the estimated cost. Whether a link to its price list is enough, or the rule requires the information itself, is an open question. RepairInfoEU treats a link as sufficient; that is a decision of the app, not the legal position. Actual amounts satisfy both readings.
Per product or per variant?
Whether the information must be given per product or per variant is not settled either. RepairInfoEU keeps it per product (a decision of the app). If variants are different models with different information, set them up as separate products.
Where the information comes from
- Manufacturers’ ecodesign obligations. For many appliance groups, manufacturers, importers or authorised representatives must keep spare parts available for seven to ten years and publish parts lists, ordering procedures and repair information. For dishwashers, door seals and spray arms must be available for at least ten years after the last unit of a model. These are requirements on the manufacturer, not rights of your customers. The periods per group are in Spare parts periods.
- French open data. data.gouv.fr publishes the data behind the French repairability index as open data (Licence Ouverte 2.0, updated daily), often with EAN, spare parts years and a link to documentation. The free barcode check searches it. Whether these figures can serve as spare parts information outside France is open, because they do not always come from the producer. The app therefore uses them only once you confirm the suggestion (a decision of the app).
- The producer directly. Ask for anything missing with the manufacturer request.

For your whole store with the Shopify app
The Shopify app RepairInfoEU shows this information on every product page below the buy button, in all 24 official EU languages. On the Essential plan ($6.99 a month) it matches each product’s barcode with the French data. Pro ($14.99 a month) checks the whole catalogue by barcode, suggests repair portals and spare parts shops from a directory of 49 brands, writes the manufacturer request, marks it as due after 14 days and keeps request and reply in a printable record. Your store shows only what you have confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to say that the producer provided nothing?
That is not settled. A notice could serve transparency, but could also read as a negative statement about the product. RepairInfoEU shows nothing in the store in that case and keeps the request in its record (a decision of the app).
Does the information become part of the contract?
Under German law it does for distance contracts, unless expressly agreed otherwise (Section 312d(1) BGB). Take over producer information with its source and date.
Does this also apply in a physical shop?
Yes. Article 5(1)(j) of Directive 2011/83/EU requires the same information for in-store sales. Germany exempts information that is apparent from the context and everyday transactions performed immediately (Art. 246 EGBGB).
