The barcode check looks up an EAN in the consolidated French repairability index dataset on data.gouv.fr (2,761 barcodes, 652 with spare parts years and 569 with a documentation link). Spare parts years appear mainly for dishwashers and vacuum cleaners; for laptops the dataset usually gives only the score. Whether sellers outside France may use these details as the repair information required by Directive (EU) 2024/825 is an open question.
What the dataset contains
data.gouv.fr compiles the published French repairability index data into one file every day. The barcode check uses the version of 19 October 2026: 2,761 barcodes from 4,830 rows, with the latest calculation for each model. Rows without a valid barcode and older calculations are filtered out. Each entry gives the score out of ten, often the spare parts with years and delivery time, and links to the documentation and the calculation. Your browser loads only the part of the dataset where your barcode can be, and the search runs in the browser.
| Category | Barcodes | with spare parts years | with documentation link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laptops | 1,889 | 16 | 16 |
| Dishwashers | 576 | 404 | 403 |
| Vacuum cleaners (corded, cordless, robot) | 178 | 124 | 42 |
| Washing machines | 92 | 92 | 92 |
| Electric lawn mowers | 16 | 16 | 16 |
| Smartphones | 6 | 0 | 0 |
| Pressure washers | 4 | 0 | 0 |
In France, washing machines have carried the indice de durabilité instead since 8 April 2025, and smartphones have had no French index since 7 July 2025; their entries are still in the dataset. The check does not show spare parts prices, ordering procedure or repair restrictions. The manufacturer request asks for those.
French index and EU rules
The indice de réparabilité is based on the French Code de l’environnement. It is not set at Union level and is therefore not a repairability score within the meaning of Directive (EU) 2024/825. There are two readings for the partial data. In one, spare parts years and manuals are manufacturer information you can show as repair information. In the other, they are published by whoever placed the product on the French market, which is not always the manufacturer, so they could mislead. The app only takes over such data once you confirm the suggestion; that is a decision of the app, not the legal position.
From the result to your store
On the Essential plan, the Shopify app RepairInfoEU matches each product’s barcode with this dataset; on Pro it checks the whole catalogue at once. Spare parts years and manuals appear as a suggestion, with data.gouv.fr as the source. For single products in other store systems, the free HTML snippet puts the information into a block you can paste.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the check not find my barcode?
The dataset only contains models for which an index was published in France, mainly laptops, dishwashers and vacuum cleaners. TVs and refrigerators are missing. For smartphones and tablets, use the EPREL lookup.
What happens if a barcode appears more than once?
For 6 barcodes the dataset lists different models. The check then shows the newest entry and names the others with their dates; check which one matches your product.
Does the camera scan work everywhere?
Only in browsers that read barcodes themselves, such as Chrome on Android or macOS. Elsewhere the button stays hidden and you type the digits. The camera image never leaves your browser.
