How long must spare parts be available? EU periods by product group

What the EU ecodesign regulations require of manufacturers for washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, TVs, smartphones and other appliances, and how sellers can use the periods for their product pages.

Under the EU ecodesign regulations, manufacturers, importers and authorised representatives must keep spare parts for washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, electronic displays, welding equipment, tumble dryers and local space heaters available for seven to ten years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market, mostly with delivery within 15 working days. For smartphones and slate tablets, the period is seven years after the end of placing on the market, applicable since 20 June 2025, with delivery within five and later ten working days (Regulation (EU) 2023/1670).

These are product requirements addressed to manufacturers, not to sellers, and they give buyers no claim of their own. Vacuum cleaners and servers have no spare parts requirement.

Periods by product group

All periods are minimum periods. They run from the placing on the market of the last unit of a model; for welding equipment, from its manufacture. “Repairers” means professional repairers; “end users” covers parts that end users can order too.

Who must comply

The regulations address manufacturers, importers and authorised representatives. Sellers are not among them. The requirements apply to the product and are not a promise to the buyer.

Because the period usually starts only with the last unit of a model, actual availability depends on when the manufacturer discontinues the model. If you sell goods under your own brand or import them into the EU yourself, you may carry these duties as manufacturer or importer; see Selling into the EU from outside and When the manufacturer provides nothing.

Vacuum cleaners, servers and e-bike batteries

The vacuum cleaner regulation (EU) No 666/2013 contains no spare parts requirement. Since 1 September 2017 it has required a durable hose, a motor lifetime of at least 500 hours and dismantling information for professionals, and it covers mains-operated models only, not cordless vacuum cleaners or robots. No newer vacuum cleaner regulation was found.

Servers and data storage products (Regulation (EU) 2019/424) have no spare parts requirement either, but rules on dismantling and eight years of firmware after the last product.

Goods with batteries for light means of transport, such as e-bikes, appear in Annex II of Directive (EU) 2024/1799 with a reference to the Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. Its requirements are not evaluated here.

Annex II: the link to the right to repair

The same groups are listed in Annex II of Directive (EU) 2024/1799, applicable since 31 July 2026. For these goods, the manufacturer must repair at the consumer’s request, to the extent the regulations set out. Domestic local space heaters were added as the eleventh entry by Delegated Directive (EU) 2026/74. What this means for vacuum cleaners, whose regulation has no spare parts rules, is an open question.

Information before purchase is governed by a different directive, (EU) 2024/825. Right to repair or EmpCo? explains the difference.

What sellers do with this

Since 27 September 2026, for goods without an EU repairability score, sellers must inform consumers about spare parts, manuals and repair restrictions where the producer makes this information available to them (Article 6(1)(v) of Directive 2011/83/EU as amended by Directive (EU) 2024/825; in Germany, for example, Art. 246a § 1(1) No. 21 EGBGB). The periods above show what the manufacturer must keep available and what to ask for. On the product page, use the manufacturer’s own information, because only the manufacturer knows when the last unit will be placed on the market.

For a whole store, the Pro plan of the RepairInfoEU Shopify app suggests repair portals and spare parts shops from a directory of 49 brands. It writes the manufacturer request once per brand for all products and flags it as due after 14 days.

Frequently asked questions

Do retailers have to stock spare parts under EU law?

Not under the ecodesign regulations, which bind manufacturers, importers and authorised representatives. If you import goods into the EU yourself, you may be covered as an importer.

Does the period start when the customer buys the product?

No. It usually starts when the last unit of a model is placed on the market, for smartphones and tablets at the end of placing on the market. While a model is still being supplied, the period has not begun.

Must manufacturers sell spare parts to consumers?

Only the parts the regulation lists for end users, such as door seals for washing machines or the display assembly for smartphones. Manufacturers may usually restrict the other parts to registered repairers.

Can I write “10 years of spare parts” on my product page?

State what the manufacturer tells you, with source and date. A figure you work out from the regulation yourself can be wrong, because the period depends on the model’s last unit.
