Laptops: which repair information belongs on the product page

No class on the label, no spare parts period in our dataset, but a French index. What to show and where to get it.

Laptops have no EU repairability score. Since 27 September 2026, sellers to EU consumers must therefore state before purchase the availability, estimated cost and ordering procedure of spare parts, repair and maintenance instructions and repair restrictions, where the producer makes this information available to them (Article 6(1)(v) of Directive 2011/83/EU as amended by Directive (EU) 2024/825).

Sellers in France must also show the French repairability index next to the price.

Why laptops have no repairability class

The EU class exists only on the energy label of smartphones and slate tablets. Under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/1669, a slate tablet has no fixed keyboard and runs an operating system for mobile platforms. A laptop meets neither condition, and neither does a 2-in-1 running a desktop operating system. No other EU act setting a repairability score for laptops had been found by October 2026, and none of the ecodesign regulations in our spare parts dataset covers laptops.

What goes on the product page

For laptops, sellers cover the five points of the repair information rule. Recital 36 of Directive (EU) 2024/825 describes what counts as made available: what the producer sent you, and what it states on the product, packaging, tags or labels. You are not expected to search the producer’s product websites. With laptops the relevant parts are usually battery, charger, keyboard and display. A block can look like this:

Example: notebook N 14 (model and prices invented)

Repair & spare parts

  • Spare parts: battery, charger, keyboard and display from the manufacturer’s parts portal, available until at least 2031
  • Estimated cost: battery €89, charger €39
  • Manuals: repair instructions and maintenance notes (links)
  • Repair restrictions: mainboard only through authorised service partners

Source: manufacturer’s information, October 2026

In distance sales such statements can become part of the contract; in Germany they do unless agreed otherwise (§ 312d(1) BGB). Take them over with source and date, and update them when the producer changes them. Spare parts information explains each point.

Where the information comes from

The producer’s documents come first. Where something is missing, the free manufacturer request asks for all five points. The barcode check finds laptops for which a French index was published, but for laptops the dataset mostly gives the score and rarely any spare parts years. The laptop ranking shows which models score best.

Stores usually carry laptops from several brands. On the Pro plan, the Shopify app RepairInfoEU suggests repair portals and spare parts shops from a directory of 49 brands, matches the whole catalogue’s barcodes against the French data and writes one manufacturer request per brand, marked as due after 14 days.

Selling to France: the repairability index

Laptops (ordinateurs portables) are one of the five categories under the French indice de réparabilité. Sellers in France show the score out of ten next to the price and make the sub-scores available with one click. The score combines five criteria, including documentation, ease of disassembly and spare parts availability. Whether the rule also binds stores without an establishment in France that deliver to French consumers is an open question. The French repairability index sets out the display rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I show the French score as the repairability score?

Not as the EU score, because it is not set at Union level. Whether it may appear as extra information outside France is open. RepairInfoEU takes only spare parts years and manuals from the French data, and only once you confirm them; that is a decision of the app.

Must the manufacturer repair a laptop?

Not under Directive (EU) 2024/1799: laptops are not listed in its Annex II. Your legal guarantee as the seller is unaffected.

What if the manufacturer gives me nothing?

Then the duty does not arise on the wording of the rule. It is open whether the product page has to mention that. If you sell laptops under your own brand or import them yourself, it is not settled whether the producer condition applies to you.
