TVs and monitors: repair information for EU online stores

Few parts for customers, more for professionals, eight years of firmware and a separate index in France.

TVs and monitors have no EU repairability class. Since 27 September 2026, sellers to EU consumers must show before purchase the producer’s information on spare parts, manuals and repair restrictions, where the producer makes it available (Article 6(1)(v) of Directive 2011/83/EU as amended by Directive (EU) 2024/825).

Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/2021 requires manufacturers to supply spare parts for seven years and firmware for eight after the last unit. France has applied its durability index to TVs since 8 January 2025.

What goes on the product page

For electronic displays, the end-user parts are few: external power supply and remote control. Professional repairers additionally get the internal power supply, connectors for external equipment such as cables, antennas and USB, capacitors above 400 microfarads, batteries and, where fitted, DVD, Blu-ray, HD or SSD modules. The manufacturer may restrict those to registered repairers. Every listed part must be available for at least seven years after the last unit of a model and be delivered within 15 working days. A block can look like this:

Example: TV 55 (model, years and price invented)

  • Parts for customers: remote control and external power supply, available until at least 2033, ordered from the manufacturer’s parts shop (link)
  • Estimated cost: remote control €25, power supply €59
  • Manuals: user and maintenance manual (link)
  • Repair restrictions: internal power supply, connectors and capacitors only through professional repairers

The seven years start with the last unit of the model, so take over the manufacturer’s year rather than working out a period yourself. In Germany, for example, such statements become part of the distance contract. Spare parts information explains each of the five points.

Eight years of firmware

The manufacturer must also make the latest firmware version and the latest security update available for at least eight years after the last unit. Updates are not among the five points of the repair information rule. If the manufacturer states an update period, you can show it next to the spare parts details, with its source.

Where the information comes from

The EPREL lookup does not help with TVs, as it only searches smartphones and tablets. The barcode check finds no TVs either, because it covers the French repairability index data only. That leaves the manufacturer’s documents and parts portal and, where something is missing, the free manufacturer request. The spare parts periods dataset lists which parts the manufacturer must keep, so you can ask precisely.

For stores carrying many brands of TVs and monitors, the Shopify app RepairInfoEU suggests repair portal and spare parts shop from a directory of 49 brands on the Pro plan, and creates the manufacturer request per brand, marked as due after 14 days.

France: the durability index since January 2025

For TVs, France has used the indice de durabilité instead of the indice de réparabilité since 8 January 2025. The score from 0 to 10 covers repairability and reliability and appears next to the price, with the sub-scores one click away. data.gouv.fr publishes the data in a separate dataset for TVs. Monitors are not on the ministry’s list. The French repairability index explains selling into France.

Frequently asked questions

Does this cover computer monitors too?

Yes. Regulation (EU) 2019/2021 covers electronic displays, monitors included, with the same spare parts periods, and Annex II of Directive (EU) 2024/1799 lists electronic displays under No. 4. The French durability index applies to TVs only.

Do I need the durability index when I sell to France?

Sellers operating in France show it next to the price. Whether that extends to stores without an establishment in France that deliver to French consumers is open. It is not an EU repairability score.

Must the manufacturer repair a broken TV?

Yes, at the consumer’s request, free of charge or for a reasonable price, because electronic displays are in Annex II of Directive (EU) 2024/1799. It may not refuse just because the TV was repaired elsewhere before.
